The Manhattan
The Manhattan Painting is a mixed media artwork built around the familiar image of the classic cocktail. A deep red drink and dark cherry sit at the centre of the composition. Behind them, layers of printed material, texture and muted tones create a contrasting backdrop. I wanted the glass to feel bold and immediate against the more fragmented background. Splashes of colour and visible layers break up the composition and give the piece a less polished, more expressive character. The result sits somewhere between a recognizable still life and a more contemporary approach to mixed media.

The Manhattan painting is part of my realism paintings, where familiar subjects are explored through different materials, textures and techniques. You can also explore Padron & Laphroaig, another still life where recognizable objects become the focus of the composition.
